Rosetta Manipulator

Mission to Deep Space

Task:

A handling system must be developed for COSIMA, a mass spectrometer on board the ROSETTA spacecraft, which uses a sample carrier to feed the dust particles of a comet’s tail to the measuring chamber for chemical analysis.

Challenge:

Highest demands on a minimum of weight, space requirements and power consumption despite extreme conditions in space. The spacecraft travels in space for 10 years until it reaches its destination.

CEMEC’s solution:

  • Development of an electromechanical system of maximum reliability
  • Feeding the sample carrier for scanning into the mass spectrometer with an accuracy of 3µm, thus increasing the measurement resolution
